THE DESIGN

To begin with, Jeanneau commissioned the renowned Italian firm Garroni Design, led by chief architect and designer Camillo Garroni, a trusted partner in developing the Leader and NC brands, to create a contemporary day boat that will please an owner's senses for years to come. From its sharp entry and long flowing deck lines to its swept, curvaceous hardtop, the DB/43 OB hints at its spirited potential for those who may choose to enjoy a crisp run to a favorite yacht club or cove, to enjoy the sun and open air with the option of shade and protection, or to retreat for a cozy night aboard in luxurious accommodations.

Next, Jeanneau tapped Michael Peters Yacht Design to create a quick, well-balanced hull and running surface that offers a dry ride, particularly desirable in a mostly open day boat, and a comfortable motion underway. Simply described, Peters gives the plumb bow a distinct knuckle and turn down quickly into sharp forward hull sections. A full-length chine begins at the stem, starting well above the waterline, to offer added lift, a dry ride, and excellent roll and turning control. Twin lifting strakes on each side of the forward vee sections, the uppermost running the full length of the bottom, help minimize the time to plane. Deadrise at the transom is 19.5 degrees to help mitigate pounding at higher speeds.

THE EXTERIOR

Owners will appreciate the option of boarding the DB/43 from the swim platform through twin transom gates, or via a starboard side gate amidships. In either case, crew or guests find good footing on teak-planked soles, and are protected by high gunwales with recessed protective handrails. Those going forward will find themselves similarly protected, taking three steps up to a slightly raised deck accessing ground tackle when anchoring, or enjoying their leisure at a cozy seating area in the bow or on the broad cabin-top sunbed.

Retreating aft, guests and crew are immediately under the protection of the hardtop, which has fixed translucent panels inset behind an electric opening sunroof. Directly beneath, a wide seamless windshield protects the spacious helm console, sized to accommodate large multifunction screens, as well as a joystick to the left and digital engine throttles flanking the tilting, sport wheel equipped with multi-function button panels. There are three well-padded captain's chairs with flip-up bolsters for standing or sitting and a centerline cabin entrance.

Abaft the helm seating, the on-deck layout and functionality of the DB/43 truly shines. A near full-width outdoor galley is equipped with everything needed for serving tasty al fresco meals—sink, trash container, 17-gallon fridge, ceramic range and electric grill, 3-drawer implement storage, large item storage (optionally available is a second 17-gallon fridge or an icemaker). Pop-up mood lighting and a wide safety rail are appreciated features.

Immediately behind the galley is a modular dinette, with an aft-facing bench seating four and wooden table that opens to serve another four-person bench facing forward. Alternately, both benches can be rigged to face forward. This aftermost bench cleverly converts to a broad sun bed in the unshaded portion of the aft deck. An optional electric shade is available for added protection.

To provide additional aft deck space for water sports access or simply additional room for portable chairs, when the boat is at rest, both of the aft hull sides fold down electrically and lock safely to form side terraces. Combined with the swim platform on the stern drive model, which optionally raises or lowers, the terraces create a multi-sided virtual teak beach in favorite anchorages.

THE INTERIOR

If the crew aboard is a family of four or five, or perhaps two couples, the DB/43 outshines competitive day boats with two private staterooms and an enclosed head compartment with separate shower—a much-appreciated option when a storm or nightfall closes in and the home port is distant. Down the centerline companionway to a central landing, there's a well-equipped breakfast point prep and storage area, which is also well-positioned for those interested in late-night treats.

The master stateroom forward has an island queen berth, while the full beam VIP guest stateroom has a large double as well as a single (optionally a couch) on the starboard side. Storage space is abundant in both staterooms.
