All About Personalised Hull Colours

Jeanneau has called upon Color Dream for its savoir-faire in hull painting for the new DB/43. In this interview with Teddy HIBON, Director of Color Dream, you can learn more about the steps involved in accomplishing this unique project!

A Personalised, Made-to-Measure Service

Located between Sainte-Maxime and Saint-Aygulf (Var, France) and created in 2009, Color Dream benefits from 20 years of expertise in hull painting, as well as in fiberglass and composite repair.

From the auto body shop, Teddy HIBON quickly became interested in the marine sector, a strong presence in the region.  The company made its name in the marine industry by offering numerous customisation services. Color Dream also features high-quality facilities, such as a spray booth designed to prevent the release of solvents harmful to the environment.

In response to recurring requests from customers for personalised hull finishes, I understood the need to offer them a dedicated service.  The application of the exterior paint, as it was done at the time, was not optimal, and I wanted to offer a high-quality paint job with appropriate facilities.

explains Teddy HIBON, Director of Color Dream.

In Five Key Steps…

For the hull paint on the DB/43, the project requires two people working for a period of about three weeks. Teddy Hibon, founder of Color Dream, walks us through the key steps for a successful hull paint job.

Before working on this type of surface, we must first go through a significant handling phase.  Once the boat is in the spray booth, we proceed to clean the hull, then we remove various elements.  Next, we move on to marking the zones to be painted, followed by the preparation procedure for painting, with sanding, washing, and taping.

After applying the paint and multiple layers of varnish, we proceed with reinstalling the various elements and decoration.  Finally, we prepare the boat to be put into the water, taking care to put the necessary protection in place, all to preserve the finished work to a maximum degree.

The Trend is Metallic Grey

This year, we opt for metallic paint!  Teddy HIBON deciphers the coming trends in paint colours:

Silver and timeless charcoal grey are the most on-trend colours, even if certain customers are also turning to dolphin blue. By adopting 'Anniversary Silver,' by ALEXSEAL Yacht Coatings, the DB/43 is entirely in keeping with this trend.

Color Dream also offers a wide array of colours, adapting to all requests to create very specific hues, such as florescent green or orange.  Faithful to the brands,  ALEXSEAL Yacht Coatings and Awlgrip, the company uses Epoxy paints for the primary coats, renowned for their water-resistant qualities and their ability to adhere to a variety of surfaces.  For the finish, the teams always apply a polyurethane-based topcoat that has been developed especially for boats.

On the subject of innovations:

In a few years, I think new innovations will be in paints that are increasingly more water-repellent or with scratch-resistant protection,

concludes Teddy Hibon.
